New Director excited about new opportunity

Posted by Tom Mellish, Executive Director, IRTA on Jul 1, 2015 5:17:00 PM

I am so excited about being the new executive director of IRTA! I have been in this position since January 5 and have already had some great experiences. Nancy has just been a jewel to work with and has allowed me to glean knowledge about IRTA and how to work with the legislature. The office staff have been very patient, understanding, and supportive of this newbie. I believe this will be a very smooth transition as we move forward.

The reason I pursued this position at this time was to be able to support and give back to the people that have been a huge part of my life forever and that is you, Indiana Educators! I was born into an education family, married into an education family, married an educator, worked with so many dedicated teachers and coaches along the way and have had the opportunity to hire some of the best young people I know to be teachers. They have all made my life better and so easy to work with through the years that I want to give back to them through this association. I truly thank the executive committee and board for this opportunity.

Going forward this association will continue to work toward securing a stable retirement plan with benefits that are cost effective for our members and to be a resource for educators. We will support future teachers through the Foundation’s scholarships, active teachers with the Active Teacher Grants and our retired teachers that come into crisis or tough times with A Hand Up program. These programs will continue to grow and can only enhance our Association as we provide service to our members and increase our visibility.

I cannot think of another group of people that continues to give back to their communities as much as retired educators. The heart and soul in you continues to serve the public in so many needed roles past our school days. Through my years as an associate member, I was always amazed at the amount of volunteer hours that were accumulated each year! This is why I am so proud and honored to be a member of IRTA and your new Executive Director.

I look forward to meeting many of you: at area meetings, the legislative brunch, the RA, summer and fall workshops or just maybe on the golf course.

Sincerely,
Tom
