Posted by Tom Mellish, Executive Director, IRTA on Mar 30, 2019 11:22:21 AM

Welcome to Indiana EdCast. I am Tom Mellish, ED for IRTA, The Association that advocates for all Indiana retired educators. Please email me at
tmellish@retiredteachers.org with your questions. We will find out the answer for you.

We are joined once by our chief lobbyist, Steve Beebe from Beebe, Scherer and Associates. We welcome Steve and look forward to his thoughts as we enter the last month of this year’s General Assembly begins.

We are into the second half of the session and Bills need to come out of Committee by April 11th. We have heard positive things about the 13th Check from Senate leadership and they have not told us no on receiving an increase.

School funding will take up a lot of the discussion going forward with the complexity issue and amount going to schools that is not keeping up with inflation. Many schools continue to have less money than they did 10 years ago. state superintendent appointment and doesn’t need to have an education background.

Legislature – We have met with many senators in leadership and the Appropriations Committee. If you have not, now is the time to contact senators for their support of the 13th Check and the $50 increase. They are all aware of HB 1139 and our request of $50. It will come down to the April Budget Forecast.

Make sure to call the office ASAP if you can attend our Legislative Brunch and would like to ride the bus from the office to the State House.

Thought of the week - Education is a human right with an immense power to transform. On its foundation rests the cornerstones of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.
